Can you believe that we are already HALFWAY done with Kindergarten?! I am blown away by how fast time is flying! They are learning so much and are growing in all areas! Just recently we started Poetry Notebooks. I can already see such a difference in everyone's reading! They are becoming more confident and proud to read for the class! In writing, we just finished our first narrative "books" and are currently working on our second "books". We are using "Fix-It Folders" to help us write better and more independently. Once we are done with our second books, we will be moving on to "How-To" Writing, where your child will be explaining how to do something such as "how to kick a soccer ball". They have made such growth these past couple weeks and I can't wait to see their writing by the end of the year!

WELCOME BACK! It's so good to be back at school and learning. We just started Poetry Notebooks in our Literacy Block. Our first poem was called Chubby Little Snowman! The kids did AMAZING with it! They are learning new words, fluency, rhyming, and so much more. I am looking forward to adding poems to our notebooks each week and to see even more growth! This week we also started writing our own books! Can you believe it? Your kindergartener is an author! We are working on narrative stories and many of the students are writing about their Christmas break. Starting next week, we are going to be using Fix-It Folders. These will be like a little tool box for them as they write. It will also allow them to become more independent. They are making such progress already and will be writing more books before we know it!
I know it has been awhile since I have updated our class page! I apologize! Life has been a bit hectic, but I am back with another weekly update! We have been very busy in our classroom. We have been learning a lot and having a lot of FUN! Yesterday, in writing, our prompt was "Oh no! Santa is stuck in the chimney!! How will we get him out?" The students did an excellent job coming up with ways to get Santa out and did a great job writing it! After we wrote, we made a fun craft!
Some reminders for this week! Wednesday is a HALF DAY! The elementary Christmas Program is Wednesday Night at the Yomitan Cultural Center! I hope to see you all there. It is going to be spectacular! We are having a cookie decorating celebration on Friday, December 8th! This is a reward to the class for earning more than 25 Kindness Links during the month of November! You are welcome to join our celebration (it starts at 2:15), just let me know so I can make sure I have enough supplies! Stay tuned for our Kindergarten Class Christmas Party on December 15th! WOW! I cannot believe that the first quarter of Kindergarten is DONE! Your children have grown so much already and I love spending every day with them! In Social Studies, our unit is called Me on the Map! This week we got to get in groups and make a big map of our classroom! The kids had fun using the big paper, markers, and collaborating together. Speaking of collaborating, did you know that every month we meet with the High School students for a program called Reading Buddies? This past month, we made pumpkin plato and made shapes and letters with it! The kids really enjoyed it (and the teachers did too!). Next Reading Buddies will have a Thanksgiving focus and we are already so excited!
Happy Monday! More and more students are finishing reading logs which makes me so happy to see! Some prizes students can pick after they complete their reading log include: line leader for the week, write in pen in class, lunch with Mrs. Rusnak outside, and lunch with a friend and Mrs. Rusnak outside! The kids are LOVING their lunch bunch outside and it's been so fun getting to know them better! In Science, we were learning about our 5 senses and did an Apple Investigation to help us learn! We got to see what our apples looked like, felt like, what we could smell, what we heard when we bit into it, and what it tasted like! We also made homemade applesauce, it was a HIT! The kids recorded all their findings in their Apple Journals. It was such a fun week!
Happy Wednesday! We are having a fun week in Kindergarten! Last week, we started learning about our five senses in Science. We got to complete some fun activities like a nature walk around the school. The kids had blast listening to the wind and people talking, looking at all the plants, smelling lunch cooking, and MORE. This week we are doing our Apple Investigation (thank you for bringing in apples). Be ready for a Friday post on our special apple experiment! DID YOU KNOW? When your Kindergartener finishes a Reading Log, they get a prize! These prizes vary from wearing a hat all day, to writing in pen, to having lunch outside with a friend and Mrs. Rusnak! Once the log is finished, I collect it and have the child pick their prize and let them know when they can claim it! Last Friday, we had our first kids finish their logs! They picked to eat outside with a friend and Mrs. Rusnak. We had such a fun time! Reading Logs are not required homework, however reading often greatly benefits your Kindergartener. I look forward to seeing more finished reading logs :)
Can you believe we are already in week 6?! We are really getting in our kindergarten groove! We had such a blast at our Kindergarten Family Sports Day and now this week we are diving into learning. In science, we have been learning about seasons and most recently, the season of spring! This week we focused the life cycle of butterflies! We put the events in order and we made our own! In reading, we are reading "Clark the Shark" and learning about characters and how characters can change in a story. We are still learning to read and write our numbers in Math. Today, we did the number 10!
Our afternoons are jam packed, but we always have snack and play towards the end of the day. The kids are loving their snack time and being able to play with the toys in the classroom or dance along to a gonoodle! We are truly LOVING Kindergarten! Just like that, week 4 of Kindergarten is done! This week was little crazy because I was out sick for 2 days, but luckily the kids had great subs and still got all their learning done. We read "The Art Lesson" and talked about what we are excited about during school. We also just finished our first chapter in Math and the students got to show what they have learned with an assessment and they all did SO WELL! We have been learning many of our letters and letter sounds and on Friday we got to use our whiteboards to play a phonics game. Also on Friday, we got to paint with our water colors during Art time! We had a blast! Even though this week was a little more chaotic, it was still fun and full of learning! Another successful and FUN week here in Kindergarten! This week, the students got to check out library books for the first time. They enjoyed their time with Mrs. Moyer and finally being able to check out their own library books. Speaking of books, these kindergarten students are learning some reading components such as retelling, problem, solution, and opinion. We read "Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day" this week, and the kindergarteners did AMAZING with all our new components!
I am so proud of how much they have grown in these first 3 weeks of school. They are making new friends, and growing stronger bonds with old friends. I can't wait to see them grow even more this year! I hope they are loving Kindergarten as much as I am loving teaching it! Happy FRIDAY and enjoy the weekend! We had a fun first week in Kindergarten! We learned the rules and expectations, when we go to specials, and how to use the computers in the computer lab (a class favorite)! Starting Monday, we are diving into the curriculum in all subject areas. There will be homework given next week. I am so excited to continuing learning with these excited kindergarteners! Stay tuned for what we are doing in the classroom next week!
